UK halal meat sector highlighted by Nuffield Fellowship awarded to Awal Fuseini.
Awal Fuseini, senior halal manager at the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), was recently named a 2025 Nuffield Fellow. The prestigious accolade highlights the development of the UK’s halal meat sector, a growing field. Awel Fuseini, an animal scientist by training, will focus on developing a resilient and sustainable halal meat production system to meet the needs of domestic and international markets. This project is of particular importance at a time when demand for halal meat is growing significantly in the UK and beyond.
Fuseini expressed his gratitude to those who supported him throughout this process, notably, AHDB, his employer, for encouraging him to undertake this new adventure. According to Fuseini, this scholarship is an exceptional opportunity to increase one’s knowledge and contribute to the development of the halal industry in the UK.
The Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust, which awards these scholarships, aims to encourage innovation and leadership in the UK agricultural sector. Rupert Alers-Hankey, director of the Trust, highlighted the exceptional quality of applications this year, saying this had made the selection particularly competitive. He also added that these scholarships play a crucial role in training future leaders of the UK’s agricultural and rural sectors.
Awal Fuseini’s sponsors, the Central Region Farmers Trust and the Three Counties Agriculture Society, will help support his project over the coming years. Through this scholarship, he will have the opportunity to conduct in-depth research into halal meat production and contribute to the development of the sector in the UK.
