“ Today we buried a 6 year old Palestinian child. It is not enough that hundreds of Palestinian children are killed every day in Gaza. Wadea Al-Fayoume is not only the victim of a hateful and despicable man. He is a victim of the mainstream media’s indifference to Palestinian suffering, a victim of their dehumanization of Palestinians, and if things don’t change, he won’t be the last.”

This funeral speech that the highly respected imam of Texas, Omar Suleiman, never thought he would have to deliver one day, resonated strongly yesterday on the other side of the Atlantic.

The words used by this eminent figure of Islam across the Atlantic, imbued with gravity and fear, will never be strong enough to convey the suffering felt by an entire community in the face of the monstrosity of the hate crime committed on Sunday, in Chicago, against Wadea Al-Fayoume, a 6-year-old Palestinian-American boy.

Far from the fire and bloodshed of Gaza, in front of a horrified audience who mourned the unbearable death, on American soil, of yet another small, innocent victim of the merciless reprisals carried out by Israel in the Palestinian enclave, Omar Suleiman expressed his deep revulsion towards his assassin, Joseph Czuba, 71 years old, but also towards all those, in America, who armed his arm.

During this poignant press conference, while faces showed immense sadness and anxiety, Ahmed Rehab, the director of CAIR, the flagship organization defending the rights of American Muslims, solemnly hammered home: “The stabbing of a Palestinian-American child is an attack on all of us.”

In Chicago, and beyond the borders of Illinois, the terrible tragedy which cost the life of the little Wadea Al-Fayoume, haunts and will haunt minds for a long time.

His body was larded with no less than 26 stabbings by his Jewish assailant, carried away by an unquenchable thirst for revenge, who is none other than the owner of the house where he has lived for two years with his mother, Hanaan Shanin, 32, on the ground floor. Until this terrible Sunday of October 15, 2023, the mother and her child of Palestinian origin and Muslim faith resided there peacefully, without any notable relational problem with Joseph Czuba.

According to the account of the facts made public by CAIR and the cruelly experienced father of the unfortunate little expiatory victim of Israel’s exterminating fury against Gaza, Joseph Czuba, after banging on the door of their apartment, went there rushed in, first attacking the mother, whom he tried to strangle. Then, armed with a knife, he dealt him several blows, before lashing out against easier prey, little Wadea, frozen by fear, committing the unspeakable to the cries of “You Muslims must all die!”

It was while managing to escape from her attacker, beside himself, and after running to call the police at 911, that the mother, panting and seriously injured, had a vision of horror: the inanimate body of her son was lying in a pool of blood, while his murderer had deserted the scene of his barbaric crime. Little Wadea was pronounced dead at the hospital, as confirmed by Will County Sheriff’s Officein Illinois.

“Our hearts are heavy and our prayers go out to the darling boy and his mother”wrote Ahmed Rehab, executive director of CAIR-Chicago, in a pen trembling with emotion, adding: “ We have full confidence in the authorities to investigate this heinous incident as a hate crime and to do so promptly “.

As for the monster of cruelty Joseph Czuba, whose vengeful hatred was measured by that of his “promised land”, he was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, two counts of hate crime and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon in what the sheriff’s office described as a ” senseless act of cowardly violence “.
