United States: Muslim organization invites Indiana lieutenant governor to meet with Muslim community after anti-Islam remarks

In the United States, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) responded to statements by Indiana Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith, who recently said: “I hate Islam. It is a demonic sect of death. » CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) is the leading organization defending Muslim civil rights in the United States. Founded in 1994, it intervenes in particular in cases of discrimination, religious freedoms and the fight against hate speech targeting Muslims.
The organization invited Micah Beckwith to visit a mosque in the state and meet with Indiana Muslims. For CAIR, these comments risk fueling prejudice and hostility towards a community already facing an increase in acts of hatred. In its press release, CAIR believes that an elected official has the right to express his religious beliefs, but that he should not use his position to present Muslims as a threat or encourage a climate of distrust towards them. On the contrary, the organization calls for dialogue and meeting.
Ahmed Rehab, executive director of CAIR-Chicago, also denounced statements he considers dangerous. According to him, this type of speech contributes to trivializing Islamophobia and can encourage acts against Muslims and their places of worship. CAIR finally emphasizes that American Muslims face an increase in discrimination and attacks. According to its latest annual report, 8,683 reports of anti-Muslim acts were recorded in 2025, a record figure since its statistics began in 1996.
