United States: Trump could reinstate the “Muslim ban” if he wins
Donald Trump plans to reinstate the travel ban on nationals of predominantly Muslim countries, nicknamed the “Muslim ban”, if he wins the 2024 presidential election. According to the Wall Street Journalits chief immigration adviser, Stephen Miller, is working on the plan as part of a broader policy to restrict legal immigration.
The “Muslim ban”, put in place by Trump at the start of his mandate in 2017, sparked heated controversy. Billed as a national security measure, the ban temporarily blocked entry to the United States for travelers from several majority-Muslim countries, including Iran, Syria and Yemen. Considered by its detractors as a form of religious discrimination, the measure provoked massive demonstrations in the United States and abroad. Although it was temporarily suspended by the courts, the Supreme Court finally confirmed its legality in 2018, before Joe Biden repealed it by decree in 2021.
While Trump is currently taking a more open stance towards the Muslim community, particularly in light of criticism leveled at Democrats over the Gaza issue, reinstating the “Muslim ban” could reignite tensions and further divide the American electorate in 2024.
