Gaza: 8 months suspended prison sentence required against Barbara Lefebvre

The prosecution requested an 8-month suspended prison sentence and a €4,000 fine against columnist Barbara Lefebvre, prosecuted for inciting hatred and advocating crimes against humanity, after her comments about civilians in Gaza. In February 2025 on I24News, she notably affirmed that it was necessary to “empty Gaza” and that Gazan civilians were “as much responsible” as the members of Hamas. The prosecution denounced a “speech of hatred of rare violence”. But we also have to talk about those who gave him a microphone for years. The media chose to invite her, to re-invite her, to offer her air time and to transform ever more extreme remarks into a simple “debate”.

By chasing the clash, the audience and the provocation, certain sets have become machines for trivializing the unacceptable. We give voice, we let the excesses flourish, then we pretend to discover their violence when the justice system takes charge. The media which have established and normalized this type of discourse bear a heavy responsibility for its trivialization. The judgment will be delivered on November 13.
