California officially recognizes Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as state holidays

This is an important symbolic recognition for American Muslims. California has just officially listed Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as state-recognized holidays. The measure was signed Monday, September 28 by Governor Gavin Newsom. California thus becomes the second American state, after Washington State in 2025, to recognize the two main Muslim holidays.

This recognition does not, however, mean that schools and administrations will automatically be closed. Civil servants will be able to use their leave to celebrate Eid, while students will be able to justify their absence. School districts will also have the option to implement a day off when local demand warrants it.

California is now home to more than a million Muslims. A community for which this decision marks a new stage in the recognition of its place in American society. Concretely, Eid now officially enters the public calendar of the State, in the same way as other major religious festivals. A simple gesture, but very symbolic for Muslim families in California.
