Dominique de Villepin denounces an “endless” and expansionist Israeli strategy
Former Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin strongly criticized Thursday on LCI the strategy led by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which he considers dangerous and leading to a lasting escalation in the Middle East. “Netanyahu is succeeding perfectly within the framework of the strategy he has laid down. The question is that Netanyahu is in an endless strategy. It’s an unlimited war,” declared Dominique de Villepin. According to him, this strategy is based on a logic of permanent interventions around Israel. “From the moment you mow the lawn all around Israel, either you are in a Greater Israel strategy, or you constantly need to move everywhere around your borders,” he explained, referring in particular to southern Lebanon, the Bekaa plain, southern Beirut, but also Syria or Iraq. For the former head of French diplomacy, this logic amounts to “expansionism” and “a security strategy at all costs which cannot stop”, because “there is always opposition”.
Dominique de Villepin also warned of its medium and long term consequences. “The main danger of this strategy is to see an increase in violence and the risk of terrorism, which could occur tomorrow in Europe,” he warned. He also mentioned an increased risk of nuclear proliferation. “The first lesson that all the States of the world will learn is that if you want to be protected from the risk of a military intervention like the one we are experiencing, you must have the nuclear bomb,” he said.
According to him, the weakening of Iran could also reshuffle the regional cards: “A whole new balance of power will be created within the Middle East and Israel will have to deal with other powers, notably Saudi Arabia or Turkey, even if we can hope that the Abraham Accords will regain the upper hand. »
